Transmission Problems? New Jeep Wrangler X
I'm stressed and at my wits ends!! This is my very first "new" vehicle I've ever bought..
2008 Jeep Wrangler, it now has a little under 12k miles and having tranny problems (this is my thoughts of course).
The service manager is at a loss, with my soon to be 3rd time bringing the Jeep back to have it looked at...they can't seem to repair anything since they can't duplicate the problem.
The problem...while driving the Jeep in either first or second gear, under the stick shift, there is a loud grinding metal noise, it's like the vehicle is trying to force it's self into another gear without me changing gears.. when this happens after being startled, since it feels like someone has hit me from behind, I put it back into gear. ...all fine and dandy.
It has happened in intersections, right after a stop sign, all very random.
2x in one day, then several days later.
They made one attempt which I can't recall what they did. and that didn't help. I will repost later and now the next option is to "tear down" the transmission. I do not like this idea! I bought a new Jeep with a new tranny not..a soon to be rebulit tranny...am I wrong to feel this way? Additionally, the service manager is keeping the Jeep until he hears the problem.
Any thoughts ideas?..anything. I'm so frustrated and sad..again, this is my frist new vechile..EVER..and it's very frustrating to think..I have years left of problems..on a new vehicle?!!..I traded in a Ford Focus with over 100k and hadn't been to a shop over the last 2 years..with problem..like this new Jeep...help...ideas?

I doubt this is it, but just in case.....
There is a common problem of the inner shift boot not being seated, causing a jump out of gear, or inappropriate pressure on the shift knob, which might explain the noise.
They most likely checked this simple thing first, but you never know.
In the cabin you can see the upper shift boot around your shift lever. If you pry that plastic ring at the base up using a trim stick, you'll see that down lower, there is an inner shift boot. Sometimes that is not seated correctly. You can wrestle that back on with your hands. It's obvious once you see and feel it.
If it's not that simple thing.. then you need a real mechanic! Good Luck.
