Default TSB - "Upshift Bump" question

Can someone describe exactly what the 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 Upshift Bump feels like?

I feel like my transmission shifts pretty smoothly, reallly depends on how hard I accelerate, then it gets a little jumpy on me, especially uphill. The RPM's will drop a little and feel a little sluggish, and then I will put a little more gas into to it and it will rev and then shift. But only if I am being real aggressive with it.

Also, does the "rumble strip feeling" really feel like the rumble strips along the highway?? I don't feel like I have ny serious shudder, but when you are looking for something you notice every little bump.

Thanks Guys! (and Girls!)

I am not really sure about the bumpshift, but I can tell you that during the colder winter days, the shudder sure felt/sounded like a 1-3 second ride over a rumble strip. Usually, it would go away after the Jeep warmed up, but then I could feel the vibration on the floor going uphill.

This is a problem that has long been pissing me off, and of course the dealer is no help. After six visits, all they have done is two flashes, and the problem is minimized to a small vibration at 1250-1300 rpms, but I think that the change can be mostly attributed to the warmer weather...and I will be back at square one next winter.

It sounds like for the shudder you actually need the new TC. You need to start "saber rattling" about initiating lemon law proceedings.

I occasionally have a 1-2 shift problem from a stop somewhat like a slip. It does it some days and on some days it doesn't. On the days it does it, I can usually repeat it. That's the problem for me. I'd love to be able to take the service manager for a ride on those days.

I think this is the same thing. On some days when I first start driving when the Jeep is shifting from 1st to 2nd (I think) it is as though a manual missing the gear (no grinding) and than it shifts. Does that make since? Is that what you all are talking about?

That sounds like what I was trying to describe.

We are talking about the automatic here so it would be under 1800 rpm when starting out.

From the research I have done just on the internet it seems the 42RLE transmission has been sluggish for years, and that may be what my problems is.

Half the timeI forget to pay attention to what conditions certain things occur and the other half I spend trying to detect the slightest variation, the result of which is I get all worked up over hitting a seam in the road.

If you look at the post title "Is anyone here a Transmission Tech" or someting like that, some of the descriptions in there sound very familiar. Especially about going up hill, the RPMs "settling in", etc.

My wife has a little toyota highlander with that "seemless shifting", makes mine feel much more noticable.

I took it in, got the "cannot duplicate", no flash, it's not bad at all right now wouldn't want to come away worse.

There's a pretty good transmission guy, may take it into him. He will do a free diagnosis, if I can really repeat the proble.

Thanks for the input...gotta get back to work.

I experience the same "rumble strip" problem, worse in the winter not so bad in the summer, like you said.
