I thought it was just leaking from a branch or something getting up there and moving the lever.

So I had one of those quickdrain ball valves on my Saab, and yes, it was easy to use. Oil change with no tools (except maybe oil filter wrench).
Then one day I was running low, and noticed a burning oil smell. Somehow the valve got kicked just ever so slightly open at some point, and it was dripping oil that was carried by the wind to the exhaust. So I put a hose clamp across the top to keep it closed, and had to use tools to change my oil again.
If you put the pan on something to hold it closer to the drain hole, you spill less. Couple of old phone books, some 4x4s, whatever, as long as it is stable.
