Surprise! If you shine a bright light into somebody's eyes, they're more likely to see you! I hate DRLs and am glad that my JK doesn't have them. What I hate worse are those folks who run around with their real headlights on because their vehicle has auto headlight off. I wonder if they consider the safety disadvantages of shining a bright light into someone else's eyes, and how the resultant reduced visibility of oncoming drivers/drivers whom they're following could increase accident potential, especially in crowded areas? Obviously, the safety advocates haven't.
Shine a bright light into somebody's eyes ???????
read para. 5 '' operate at half their normal power''
5 Will DRLs shorten headlamp bulb life or lower fuel economy?
Running vehicle lights in the daytime does not significantly shorten bulb life. Systems like those on General Motors cars that use high beams are designed to operate at half their normal power during daylight hours, thereby conserving energy and reducing the effect on a vehicle's fuel economy.
I have been driving with headlights on at all times since 1996. A car I was driving got hit by a guy on a bright summer's day that didn't see me. The only time my lights are off while driving are for trail runs when I know I will be driving in water and when I need spotting at night.
Regarding power and bulb life, I'm pretty sure my alternator consumes the same amount of engine horsepower whether the lights are on or off. I don't think I've replaced any more bulbs than if they had been off. In fact, I reckon they actually last longer. The tail lamps in my '93 XJ lasted 12 years! Could this be because my bulbs have never been driven with cold brittle filaments?
In Switzerland, we don't have DRL law, but we do have plenty of tunnels that you have to have you headlamps on for. Most people switch their lights on for every trip to avoid forgetting switching them on in a tunnel.
I would hate to have reduced power DRL too, but I wouldn't mind having an automatic lights on capability. I've replaced more headlamp switches than bulbs in the last 12 years.

OR
Your headlights will self-extinguish in 20 minutes anyway!
I've added relays to many of my past vehicles. DRLs have removed that need.

I have an Austrian spec Rubicon which has DRLs. These DRLs are simply the main headlights at dipped beam. The DRLs come on the moment you put the gearbox in D. The rear lights come on as well. They switch off when you're in P or N or when the handbrake's on. I don't think they are running at 50%, because often, when driving at night, I forget to switch the lights on and only notice when I can't get main beam on. But there's not difference between DRL and dipped.
I'm pretty happy with them, but as someone rightly pointed out, there's no way to switch the lights off completely.
Several European countries mandate them and as far as I know they're going to be mandatory in the Union in a cupouple of years.

Of course you wouldn't want to drive that way, but if you were stationary and wanted them off then it may be an option.
I asked in a different section but haven't quite got an answer....
Do the JK sold in the U.S have daylight running lights?
That is to say when you start your engine do your headlights come on automatically? (usually high beam at 50%).
The reason I ask is because I am changing to the DELTA XENON headlights and would like to find a way to connect to the "city light" feature of the lights. It is a separate bulb enclosed in the headlight unit.
Anybody in the U.S able to respond?
