U.S. model have daylight running lights?
I was in Bangor, Maine for 4 months recently and went to a local dealer for oil change, etc...service guy mentioned they could easily and quckly "program" my JK for DLR for free...it was done in a flash...seems many Canadians come to Bangor to buy vehicles since many popular models are not so readily available, and this is standard practice to "install" DLR for vehicles going "home" to Canada.
Driving with your headlights on during the day makes your vehicle more noticeable. No, it has nothing to do with it being dark all day long in Canada due to the harsh 12 month winters they have. Cars tend to blend in with their surroundings, pavement and so on. Headlights make it stand out. Canadians have known this since what.. the 80's?
Don't laugh, it happens

And they don't hurt my eyes, even when the days are down to 8 hours of light and I have less tan than the paper in my printer. You guys down south shouldn't have a problem.
4 | How effective are DRLs?
Nearly all published reports indicate DRLs reduce multiple-vehicle daytime crashes. Evidence about DRL effects on crashes comes from studies conducted in Scandinavia, Canada, and the United States. A study examining the effect of Norway's DRL law from 1980 to 1990 found a 10 percent decline in daytime multiple-vehicle crashes.1 A Danish study reported a 7 percent reduction in DRL-relevant crashes in the first 15 months after DRL use was required and a 37 percent decline in left-turn crashes.2 In a second study covering 2 years and 9 months of Denmark's law, there was a 6 percent reduction in daytime multiple-vehicle crashes and a 34 percent reduction in left-turn crashes.3 A 1994 Transport Canada study comparing 1990 model year vehicles with DRLs to 1989 vehicles without them found that DRLs reduced relevant daytime multiple-vehicle crashes by 11 percent.4
The only accident I have been in was in a car I owned (an 06 Civic Si) with DRLs...someone (In a Jaguar S-Type) did not see me coming and pulled out in front of me . I T-Boned the drivers side and totalled both cars (I was going 45 and had no time to hit the brakes - that is how close I was when they did not see me). Mine had 3000 miles on it, $14,500 worth of damage.
I tried to get the DRL's turned on in my new '08 Rubicon and was told that it was possible to do it with '07s but not '08s because of a computer change on American JKs. So no one has done this with an American '08 JK...right?
I asked the dealer in Bangor, Maine if the DRLs could be turned on on a US market Wrangler. The tech said no, Chrysler would not send the data over the internet to allow it to happen. He has tried it on his own Wrangler.
I just looked in my new Factory Service Manual, which said it is mandatory for Canadian market vehicles, and an option on US market vehicles.
I guess if Chrysler won't cooperate, it does't matter what the manual says.

Hmm. My dealer said my 08 Sahara did not have DRL's, as I had asked him about it for insurance purposes. (lowers the premium)
I noticed when I start rhe Jeep in the day time, the lights come on, so I figured maybe I did have them. I never checked to see if they go off or stay on. I'll have to check this out tomorrow.

The dealer in Bangor, Maine tried it on 4 '08 Wranglers, at my request. They even tried the steps outlined in this thread (I think it was this thread). Could not be done. It takes a download from Chrysler, which Chrysler will not send for US market Jeeps.
