My '08' Rubi Unlmtd with 16000 miles has done this about every couple of weeks as well. Sometimes in the morning or after sitting all day in the work parking lot. Temperature doesn't make a difference on mine. It is a very quick grind noise that I can't reproduce on command so taking it in for repair is futile. It does sound like a starter issue though if I had to guess. If anyone has this sorted out, please post a response. This can't be good in the long run.

2007 Rubicon, 17,000 miles, Automatic. I get the same thing and like everyone is saying, it's inconsistent...it's definitely a grinding noise, though. It also happened on the 2007 Wrangler X that I used to have....weeiiird.

mine was a grinding noise, not a knock. try a motorcraft filter and see if you still have it. if it still does it, you know what it is not

Sounds like we're all talking about the same thing (grind not knock)... so that's a start.

Michelle, I actually just changed my oil a couple weeks ago and put a FRAM Though Guard filter on and the noise continues. So not sure that is the golden ticket to solving this problem. But definitely appreciate the help...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone out there knows what's going on.

On mine, which does it only on very cold mornings, I attribute it to the Bendix not retracting quickly enough.
X2, if it is truely a high speed grinding noise, this would be my thought as well. Had the same issue on an old Corvette I used to own. Have never had it on the JK though.

You read my mind... I just remembered that it only does it with the A/C on also! I'll edit my OP since that has something to do with it. Although, a lot of people have stated it only happens to them in cold weather - I doubt they'd have their A/C on...

Could you guys elaborate on this more? Sorry, but I have 0 experience with Bendix so can't put the pieces of the puzzle together. Thanks!

maybe they have the oil filter issue. my ac is almost always on year round, and i try to remember to leave it off when i get out of the jeep so that it won't be on during start-up. if i've started the jeep and then turn the ac i don't get it.

the sound i get when the ac is on is still a grinding, but it almost sounds like its dropping as its grinding (i dunno if that makes sense, but that's the best way i can explain it)

the oil filter sound was just a grinding
