I just had mine in last week for it's first oil change and I was told that "that sound is normal". I also think that it sounds scarry, but I think it's because of the oil viscosity used ,5/20 is a really thin oil and I can see how it could cause a metal on metal sound upon start up. I also think that if this is the cause of the noise AND it was really a problem at least some of the 07 engines would have blown up by now.

Normal?

This is definitely not normal...

Mine has only made the noise once since I switched oil filters, so we'll see if maybe (fingers crossed) it will keep quiet. I just hate having to hold my breath every time I start my brand new Jeep.

On mine, which does it only on very cold mornings, I attribute it to the Bendix not retracting quickly enough.
Yes. It sounds like the starter to me too.

mine does it too and has for the last year or so...

I'm reluctant to take mine to the dealer because they take forever to do anything and then they only actually address the issue about half the time...no wonder Chrysler went bankrupt their customer service sucks.

I have a 07 with 15k miles on it now. Only time mine does it is when let it sit all day and it's over 90+ degrees outside. Once started i can turn it off and start it back up and it doesn't do it anymore. Doesn't do it in the mornings though when outside temp is 60-70s.

I have the sound too, and ice in a blender is a pretty good description of it. It's not really a metal-on-metal sound, but it's not pleasant. Mine (like most, it seems) happens when the Jeep has sat for a long period of time. It's less harsh sounding when it's been sitting for half a day or so and harsher when it's been sitting for over a day or more. I thought the A/C might have something to do with it (I have a habit of leaving it on when I turn the Jeep off), but I've tried remembering to turn the A/C off and it has still made the noise. I don't remember this starting until June or so, so it seems like it's just a summer thing, maybe (plus, when I searched for it, there was this thread from this July and a similar one from last July, so... Then again, some of you said you experienced it only when it was cold out, so who the hell knows...

Like many of you, I won't take it to the dealer for it b/c it'll have to be there for a while just sitting for it to even make the noise, and, well, my local dealership just sucks. Hopefully it's not something causing damage.

Mine still does it on occasion. I know what it SOUNDS like. It sounds like the starter drive is dry and needs grease. Like when the flywheel kicks it out, it's spinning dry. I'm going to remove my starter this week and inspect it. I'll let yall know what I find. Could be as simple as greasing a bronze bushing.

ice blender noise is the starter. bendex engages to flywheel and sticks somewhere. i dont know if it sticks after it has cranked over or if could possible be double tapping the flywheel. to reproduce the noise which i dont recomend is to crank the jeep and then try to crank again after its running. id guarantee u will hear same noise.

to fix, the starter can be taken off and cleaned up most of the time. but if this happened alot then the bendex could be toasted. u would see deinite wear and marks. u may be able to tear the starter completely down and clean everything, lube it and be good to go.
