Default What the Hell is That Thing?

This has been driving a few of us nuts!!

There is a little (about a half inch round) translucent reddish round thing that sits in the center of the dash near the windshield? WTF is it?

I think we ruled out that it is not the GPS receiver, satellite radio receiver or the auto headlights.

It is not on all of the JKs/JKUs. It may only be on 2012 models (I don't remember it being on my 2008 JKU).

Could it be the remote starter? Anyone know what this is?

Were daytime driving lights new for 2012 JKs/JKUs or were earlier models equipped with daytime driving lights?

That would make sense! I have daytime driving lights on my 2012 and I have that sensor on the dash. Can anyone else confirm that?

BTW - Why don't the daytime running light come ENABLED from the factory? I had to enable them with my ProCal.

On second thought, I don't think it is the daytime driving lights. The daytime driving light just automatically come on whenever you put the Jeep into gear and don't have you regular headlights on.

If I have my switch to auto headlights they do. Yes, it could be for the auto headlights. I will have to test that out later.

It's the auto-headlight sensor.... Cover it up with your hand, and your lights will come on...

From the 2012 owner's manual....

Automatic Headlights — If Equipped
This system automatically turns the headlights on or off
according to the ambient light levels. To turn the system
on, turn the end of the multifunction lever to the AUTO
position (third detent). When the system is on, the
Headlight Time Delay feature is also on. This means the
headlights will stay on for 90 seconds after you turn the
ignition switch to the LOCK position. To turn the Automatic
System off, turn the end of the multifunction lever
out of the AUTO position.

So that little dome thing is the sensor that detects "ambient light levels".
