when i first open the door i can hear some motor. what is it?

There have been lots of guesses, but no one has found the specific item that makes the sound.

Does it sound like it is somewhere in the dash? I've been wondering about that myself, the pre '12 did not make the same noise.

Most of the guessing took place pre-'12.

It's the hvac cabin recirculation door. It opens and closes half way when the key is turned. Noticed this when I had the dash apart on my 11 while doing a head unit install.

If its behind the glove box, the sound is the motor for the air system that moves a plastic piece that regulates the amount of recirculated air in the Jeep.
