what are these wires for?
So the other day i hit the trails and broke my 7 pin plug off its holder.
The socket is still in one piece and so i taped it to the holder just till i got hold of another one.
Then i pulled it apart and that standard looking "7" pin plug turned out to be a 9 pin plug. It has an extra little wire connected to each side of the socket. What are these for?

Here's what i've got:
1 yellow the left hand turn signal
2 black the reversing signal
3 white the earth return
4 green right hand turn
5 blue service brakes
6 red stop lamps
7 brown rear lamps, clearance and side marker lamps.
So far all is normal.
Then there is a grey or slate coloured wire and a white wire about half the size of the others
The white is an earth return and loops off the no. 3 pin. But the grey one i have no idea.
And what are they for?

I have now discovered what it is.
It's a reed switch that tells you that the trailer is plugged in or something.
There are 2 types:
Normally open and
Normally closed.
But i don't know which one i've got.

I have not been able to locate a proper wiring schematic that is JK specific. The hieroglyphics that MOPAR sends are about worthless.
The only thing I could find was a schematic for a WK (Grand Cherokee). It may help?

Cheers buddy. Slightly different but as close as anything i've seen.
Turns out this connector with a reed switch is commonly used in vehicles with reversing sensors.
It's a normally closed switch that opens when a trailer is connected and in doing so disables the sensors so that they don't come on when reversing the trailer.
However i do not have reversing sensors on my wrangler.
So as far as i can tell jeep must have purchased these cheeply in bulk and fitted them to all tow packs with the view of selling a reversing sensor kit as an upgrade and/or not having to make up different wiring looms for each model in the jeep range(one loom fits all).
But this is just a theory.
If anyone else has a theory or the actual answer i'd love to hear it.
I just wanna know why is it so?
