why the heck would u use your brakes for something your motor can do? an auto transmission downshifts for a very good reason...

I do downshift to match my speed and use brakes at the same time when coming up to a stop light or stop sign most times. I like to let the engine do the work when possible.

I don't agree with downshifting all the way into first though. I look at first gear as being the gear used to get moving, not to stop. I may be incorrect in my thinking, but it makes me feel better. I will downshift as far down as second, and by then I am going slow enough that I push the clutch in and use the brakes the rest of the way to stop.

Huh?

Most auto trans' don't downshift for any engine braking purposes.

Also, brake pads are cheaper to replace than piston rings and valves.

Most dont. But I used to going down a huge hill to my house everyday. before my regear that is. Iv got the older 3.8 and only have the option of 1 or 2. I would need to use 3rd now down that hill.
Offroad I use it all the time. Makes life much easier!

Stay muddy my friends

The 42RLE in the JK does. Like I said earlier in the thread, it will shift from O/D to third to keep from gaining speed down a hill. And if that's not enough, the injectors will shut off.

6th to 4th for engine braking, if done properly, is very smooth and I seriously doubt will lead to excessive clutch wear (compared to aggressive take-offs). I only ease it into neutral the last few feet to a complete stop, unless I think I might need to slip it into 2nd for a sudden green light.

Minor point, but during engine braking, you're not burning any gas, whereas if you were in neutral you would be burning gas to keep the motor idling.

Old hot rodding habit but I down shift and use the brakes. I also still use the throttle to settle the Jeep in turns, but no more heel and toe, (probably a good thing too).

LMFAO.

you cant be serious? Engine braking will not result in a blown motor...if you think this...take off your tinfoil hat.

Auto transmissions do in fact gear down...clearly you have not paid attention. They do not just go into neutral.

Where does one get tinfoil hats nowadays? I can only find aluminum foil to make my hats! For some of us, such hats are of religious significance, don't tell me you are going to violate my freedom to religion...

I have also heard a metal hook works pretty good if you want to minimize wear and tear, they are found at dog sled pro shops!

True. With my magnaflow exhaust I can hear it clear as day downshifting. And it sounds oh so sweet.
