The latch "knows" if it is open or not.

One way folks leave open their door but kill the door-open chiming is to force the latch to the closed position. (just don't slam the door without re-opening the latch first.) I'd just unplug it....

The switch is attached to the latch. If you take a screwdriver and close the latch the lights and everything go off even with the doors open. Pull the handle and screwdriver back open and the lights come on.

If there is no door to open the Jeep power stays on for three minutes or so after the key is turned off. If there was a door to open then the power goes off when its opened.

Well, what is the wire for? I have same question. I'd almost consider removing the door card to see where the wire goes...

The wire goes to the latch to determine if the latch is open or closed. At minimum it switches the dome light and the radio, if equipped. Rigs with more options get more communication (alarm, power locks and windows, etc.)

So you can listen to your tunes while you're walking away...

Ah, I see. Rather than have a spring loaded switch in the door jam by the hinges they use a sensor in the door latch. That is I presume safer as you need to know if the door is latched, not just closed.
