Default When to do the first oil change?

I have an offer from the closest dealership for a free oil change, tire rotation, etc. I bought the Jeep July 9th, 2013 with 42 miles and now have 6,400 on it. The oil looks dark but not black. I do have the EVIC and no oil change notification yet. It's a four hour, one way drive to the dealership for me. I'm sure there are a lot of opinions, but I can't find anything in the manuals except that the change oil warning will come on. So let's hear what y'all think. Thanks

I change mine every 3,000 religiously with synthetic. I would probably not go much past 6,000 miles. Better to be safe than sorry.

When the manufacturer says: every 8000 miles.

8000 is given as a max number not to exceed. I choose to do mine every 5000 miles. Many others on this forum also do the 5k interval. It's very easy to remember.

How much is your time worth? An 8 hr round trip for a free oil change seems a little much.

I did my first at about 6K. I drive about 6k a year on the Jeep. So, once a year for me. I do it each spring. If i drove more, Id prolly do something like every 6-8K. Simply getting the oil changed sometime during that milage interval when I was in the neighborhood anyway. If I lived in an area with more extreme climates or wheeled it in harsh terrain a lot, I would consider more frequent changes. I live in North Eastern MD.

I didn't see the 4 hr thing in your post. That is just crazy. Absolutely no way I would ever do that. Can't even believe you would consider driving 8 hours for an oil change and tire rotation. Silly.

4 hours is crazy for an oil change. If that is the closest dealer you must live out in the boonies. You would spend more in gas then paying to have it done closer.

But to answer your real question I am anal about that sort of thing and had mine done at 1000 miles. After the first I will do it every 4000. Some will say I am wasting my money. I spend about $80 a year having the local Jeep dealer do my oil changes. I buy their oil change package. That is a whole lot cheaper than my friends who say I am wasting my money who use the "extended" oil change plan and have replaced blown motors.

On new engines I do the first oil change at 500 miles then every 5000 using synthetic oil. Using regular dino oil I would change it every 3000 miles. A 8 hour trip to the dealer would cost you more in gas then it is worth.

Ditto on all suggestions. More importantly, check the oil level frequently. Don't rely on the oil change light. DIY with a good filter and quality oil. Dino or full synthetic, your choice, your wallet. The number of oil change threads are overwhelming.
