The 3.8 is a good motor as long as you don't run too big a tire. With the 6 speed I would say it is good up to 37" tires and 5.13 or 5.38 gearing with the auto I would not want to run anything bigger then 35" tires with 5.13 or 5.38 gearing.

I run it with 40's and 5.13 gears and there is not enough motor where I live. Highway performance is lacking.

^^^ My plans exactly. I can't say I love or hate the 3.8, for me, it's just a motor. No issues, nothing special, it just works how a motor should work and that's that. I don't think the issue people have with lack of power is a direct result of the motor, rather the fact that chrysler put crap gear ratios in the transmissions (especially autos). If I do any "power adders", they won't be to the motor, they'll be to the transmission.

Can't complain about my 3.8. I have a 2008 JKUR and bought the lifetime warranty. The only thing I have replaced under warranty so far is a manifold. And my dealership is mod friendly so no plans to swap it out. 85k on it and paid for.

Maybe I am wrong but I get tired of hearing how much better the 3.6 is over the 3.8 , when I think the biggest change with the 3.6 was the transmission not the engine

I always wonder what the 3.8 would be like with a better auto tranny

And no complaints with my 3.8 , maybe my tranny but not the engine

2010 sahara jku 42k miles, no complaints here. 3.73s and auto. Runs smooth and quiet. Got superchips flashpaq and it works great on the 3.8
No problem with engine, no leaks, no oil loss.

'08 JKUR auto, no issues here! Run an aFe oilless filter and a flashpaq. Plenty of power with the flashpaq and 5.13s...

81k on my 08, and I really like the engine. Mine uses some oil, but I've not had any issues at all, besides that. I've got 4.10 gears and a 6 speed, and I'm running 33" tires. Power is just right. I'll feed it all the oil it wants, if it gets me beyond 200k. I've got the lifetime powertrain warranty, too, so that gives some peace of mind. I've seen a number of these in mini vans past 200k, and they all used oil, too.

What's not to like about a motor that routinely surpasses 200k and gets 19-20 mpg's?

That's where I am. I'm closing in on 100k and I feel like it's just getting broken in. Runs like a top and aside from oil and cleaning the throttle body, I've not done anything else special to it.
