Default Whooshing Noises Behind Dash

Hello everyone,

New guy here - I did A LOT of searching on the forum to see if anyone else is experiencing this and I did not find anything so hopefully this is not a duplicate.

With that said, last night, I was towing my tractor on my 4x8 utility trailer and I noticed a "whooshing" sound coming from behind my dash when I turned left and right. The noise seems proportional to how fast I take the turn and how far I turn the wheel. The sound seems to come from behind my instrument panel, but I swear it sometimes sounds like it comes from the passenger side, behind the dash. When I got home, I took the trailer off and went back out and it still made the same whooshing noise.

Today, I ran some errands and again, still made the noise. I swung by my local NAPA and the guy working happened to own a 2014 JK and said although unlikely, check the power steering fluid. He ended up coming to take a look himself because the fluid did NOT appear to be low. He took the cap off the tank and took a whiff and said the fluid smells a little "burnt" and that it may not hurt to flush the tank a few times and see if that helps. I took his advice and came home and flushed the tank 3x (starting the car each time and turning the wheels a few times).

After flushing the tank, I went for a test ride and no luck, the noise is still there. It does sound a little better, but not much.

Lastly, this only happens when the car is in motion. It does not make any noise when the wheels are turned when stopped. I also just crawled under the car and it looks like my engine coolant is low - could that be a factor?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I've owned wranglers my whole life and this is a first for me - THANKS!

-Mike

mine made a swooshing sound when coolant was low also.. sound came from behind center dash area... I only noticed it upon starting the engine however. I have seen posts about that, so you may have to keep searching. I had mine flushed, and new coolant put in, and I have not noticed it since. Good luck

So it could be air in the coolant. The heater core is up under the dash, and the coolant hoses circulate through the core right where you're probably hearing the gurgling. Turn the heater on high and drive around a while--it may whoosh and gurgle even more. I think the JKs have a self-bleeding system, and if so, driving around with the heat on will bleed off the air. But I could be thinking f another car.

If that doesn't stop it gurgling, check the coolant level, add if necessary, and drive around some more w/ the heat on. make sure you drive around--the water pump won't flow too much coolant just at idle. If I am wrong about the self-bleeding, you may need to bleed it manually. That's all I got for you. Good luck!

Had this when I first got my jeep and it was air in the cooling system. Took a few months but it eventually self bled itself out. Had it again when I did a coolant flush. Bled the system manually and it shut up pretty quick.
