Why do people even purchase jeeps?

I agree on Harley's being a very dependable machine. I put 90,000 miles on my 2008, 37,000 on my 06, 34,000 on my 04, 27,000 on my 02, and now have 20,000 on my 2015. I only changed bikes as I upgraded to different styles. I ride a lot....LOL Never had a problem other than I had a brake light switch go bad in Colorado once. Quick stop at NAPA and a bottle of brake fluid and I was back on the road.

Now as most of us know I didn't mean you can confuse a Harley for a Jeep! Some people I guess need a little more information to understand what I was trying to say. When you buy a Harley/Jeep you are getting a blank canvas and with all the aftermarket parts it is easy to make them yours with your idea of what it is supposed to look, or sound, or run like. I too have hauled my Harley to Colorado with the Jeep for use on the roads while the Jeep for the trails. That is the best of both worlds IMHO. I know there are differing opinions on bikes like there are Jeeps. I for one am not going to bash someone because of what they ride or drive.

Harley, NOT fun, looks like a ass pirate riding one, and can't go anywhere..(always broken).

I hated my Harley...and traded it in on you guessed it....another jeep!
I traded my 2010 Jeep on a new Harley....LOL Love the new bike too! Mine is never broken and none of the 5 I have owned ever broke. At least not anymore than my 2010 Jeep which had several shop repairs. Just saying. Some people should ride Harleys just like some people should drive jeeps.

I believe Jeeps are very practical.

Durable, rugged, reliable all weather transportation.

Very practical and fun too.

Default Why did I buy a Jeep

Why did I buy my JK? I'll try to keep the long story short.
It was 2010. I was 60 years old. I needed a utility vehicle. I wore out three min-vans over a couple of decades and wanted something with similar payload, fold-flat seats for load space and 4 doors. And I wanted a stick shift. I was tired of automatics. Really tired of automatics. My first five vehicles were stick and I wanted to go back.

I started looking at 4-door pickups and the prices were staggering. At the time, I didn't know the Jeep was made with 4 doors. Guess I wasn't paying attention. I had no thoughts of buying a Jeep. I discovered the 4-door JK almost by accident while at a Chrysler dealer looking at trucks and vans.
It had 4 doors. The back seats folded flat. It could be had with a stick shift. That would work for me. The price was right. So I bought it.

It has turned out to be a great decision. It has the payload and space I need. It gets very close to the gas mileage of my past mini-vans. I really like the high point of view. I hate low cars that drag my butt on the pavement. I hate not being able to see past/over the cars ahead of me. It's a bit like going back to my truck days.

And it turns out, I really enjoy driving it. I don't do top-off, as I need all the glare protection I can get (67 yr old eyes) but I pull the doors whenever it gets warm enough. I love driving doors off. Can ANY other vehicle do that? It's bailed me out in 18 inch snow storms and 2 foot floods. I've pulled trailers all over the place even at interstate speeds. I've rescued others from snow and mud.

In 2015 we drove it to Moab (2,500 mi round trip) and had the best vacation I've ever had - and I've had some really good vacations in my time.

In 2016 the Blue Book/Edmonds/NADA value finally dropped down to what I paid for it new in 2010. And in my area you get Blue Book when you sell. Take that BMW.

In 2016 we drove to Wasteland Weekend in California. Over 5,000 mi on the road. Still a great highway car for my tastes.

It's now 2017. It just passed it's 7th birthday and has 75,000 mi on it. I still love it. Only one (1) disappointment - the 6-speed manual transmission is poor. The 1st and 2nd gear synchronizers are terrible. I've driven stick shift all my life - over 50 years of driving. This is the worst trans I've ever owned or driven. Other than that, I love it.

No it doesn't go fast. No it doesn't get great gas mileage. No it doesn't have a soft, marshmallow ride, thank goodness, I like to feel the road beneath me. No it's not pretty or sexy looking. Don't care.

I learned all the great, positive characteristics after I bought it.
This is called serendipity.

My '08 is pretty dependable...and the roads here suck all winter long (and sometimes in summer during construction season).

I asked for a Jeep as my first car (well technically my third if you count the one we traded in, and the one I drove for like 6 months) because I love them.

My dad has an '85 CJ8 Scrambler that he and I have been restoring, and it is so much fun to work with him on it! We've spent a lot of Saturdays and Sundays out in the garage upgrading and restoring CJ (that's what I named it). On my 17th birthday, I asked my dad if I could stop driving the 2011 Prius I got for my 16th, and start driving CJ. He said yes, and boy was it a lot of fun! Not only is CJ fun to drive with the top and doors off, but it's also a chick magnet

Then one day my dad was driving CJ down the tollway when a Jeep Wrangler X started to roll. He slammed on the brake, but the drums wouldn't stop the wheels fast enough.

I came home that night from work to see CJ with it's cover on, not knowing what had happened. I parked, walked inside, and asked why it was covered. My dad explained to me that there was an accident. The driver of the X wasn't wearing their seatbelt, or paying attention. They tried to pass a truck that was towing a platform, and their front passenger wheel popped up onto the platform while they were turning. Then they flipped and began rolling.

A few days later, my dad and I stripped all of our upgraded parts off CJ in case it was deemed "totaled" by our insurance. Turns out all our work was for nothing because CJ's at the shop getting her body fixed! My dad and I had only the body and repainting things like the bumper and side steps left to restore, so now, when she comes back, she'll be completely restored!

Long story short, I began driving the Prius again. My dad and I began to look into getting a Jeep for me since he knows that for me, it would be embarrassing to tell my friends that I drive a Prius, as well as the whole deal where I drive too fast, and in CJ, I drove slower.

I was expecting a TJ or YJ, maybe a CJ7 for him and me to restore. Boy was I surprised. My dad had gone, secretly, to exchange the Prius (claiming it was getting it's airbags fixed, which it was, but not for that long) for a Black JKR!

I love Jeeps because my dad is my idol, and he has created in me an appreciation for Jeeps. He and I took Rubi off road Dec. 31st. My Jeep is a way for my dad and I to make memories.

Also, they're a ton of fun!

I wanted a convertible that I could park anywhere.
