I know this has been covered before...

But I just had my windshield replaced by Safelite. Installer was very friendly and professional.

However it was sprinkling when I went to take a look at it. Got it home after it stopped raining...

Should I be able to see all the butyl adhesive around the edges of the glass? What i mean is, I can see it underneath - it's not oozing out the sides or anything. I just don't remember being able to see any adhesive at all from the exterior before.

It also seems like there is a larger gap between the top of the windshield and on the driver's side than there was before.

Then when I was cleaning it (he did clean it, but he missed a couple spots) there are "specs" that are trapped inside (yes, inside!) the glass on the passenger side. (Pic with red arrow)

I requested a MOPAR replacement and this is indeed a MOPAR stamped DOT22 windshield and not an OEM replacement.

Did I get a defective piece of glass and a botched install? First time I've had a windshield replaced in a vehicle before. I feel lucky, my original lasted me over six years!

In my opinion you got a flawed piece of glass and an OK install...have seen way worse!

 

Haha. Yeah, I'm definitely thinking the glass is flawed. That small spec is the largest ... but there are a bunch of them clustered on the passenger side. I mean, I don't expect perfection, but I'd like to think that if I asked for a MOPAR replacement it would at least be a bit better than the OEM replacement. I would have expected something like that to happen with an OEM replacement, not a factory part.

What do you think I should do? I'm in PA and I have to pay to get new inspection stickers put on, so obviously before I do that I'd like to have them make it right.

There is definitely a larger gap across the top, it's tight on the bottom and on the driver's side it is wider compared with the passenger side. The glass is level, and it's so slight that no one would probably notice it. I hate being OCD about these things.

 

I just had mine replaced not long ago and it looks nothing like that around the edges or specs in the glass. Looks like the day I bought it. I would not be happy with that install. Does not look professional. Sorry to throw bad news at ya. Good luck

 

Thanks for the reply. I will be calling them on Monday. I thought something seemed off about it. I paid $100 and the balance was covered by insurance. Perhaps I should try another Safelite shop as it is warranted through them.

 

My biggest concern would be if it was water tight, and didn't whistle. Probably need to change it again before too long anyways! I'm not sure what the difference between quality of an OEM and one of the after market windshields, but I found none when it comes to stone blockage! If a rock hits it, she usually requires at minimum a repair, and at worst replacement. That is what they make glass coverage insurance for.

Yes I would call Safelite back first thing on Monday and start the process for a new piece of glass.

In the factory they have special equipment and fixtures to get the glass exactly centered. In the field not so much...but these guys are the pros and you should expect a professional installation.

 

I'm not so sure I would agree about the Mopar glass being of better quality. It seems to me that almost everything stock on these Jeeps are at best built to minimal safety standards, from the headlights, to the ball joints, to the battery, so i can't imagine why they would go all out on the windshield. Which is why when most of us see the need/opportunity to replace something, it is usually with an after market upgrade instead of an OEM part.
I know when I went looking for a better quality replacement glass I was told by more than one glass company, that there is really only one grade of DOT manufactured glass, as they are all pretty much made to the same standards. Now perhaps I was given bad information, but It made sense to me, and since I figured I would be replacing it again much sooner than I would like, that I would just accept it.

 

Here in Ky all is covered by insurance, no deductible with full coverage on glass. In this area all windshields for jeeps are made by Pinkerton Glass. I got a windshield that is the same as factory. Even reads DOT instead of Pinkerton. Only way to tell the difference. Has little jeep and grill. But mine is centered with out all that excess adhesive around the edges. They should give you another one with the defects in the glass. I'll see if I can gets some pics tomorrow so you can see the difference. I hope all works out for ya. Follow up tomorrow.

 

Thanks for your help. Mine is a 2007, so it didn't have the Jeep grille above the rearview mirror and the little Jeep climbing up the mountain on the passenger side to begin with. However, a friend brought his brand new 2013 over so I could look at the seam around the edge of his. His is also recessed deeper in the frame - mine almost sticks out a bit. Like the installer used too much epoxy or didn't compress it enough. My point is that I shouldn't be able to tell that a new windshield was installed. I know mine looked like his before. It lined up nicely around all the edges, and you couldn't see any adhesive anywhere around the frame.

Monday morning I'll be calling and complaining - they will make it right.
