Windshield Replacement Question
Replacing an JK windshield glass requires the original glass to be cut out and the ORIGINAL URETHANE ADHESIVE to be removed, and the proper primer replaced on the windshield frame pinch weld. Where you run into problems is when a tech is employed at a low hourly rate, or on commission. The turning over of as many jobs as possible in a day increases their income. This leads to poor quality, rushed work. A ''short cut'' windshield installation is one where the uncut portion of the original windshield urethane adhesive is left in place and a bead of adhesive is placed on the new glass and then the glass is set into place. This leaves a poor installation bond, a glass sticking out of the frame, and sometimes an excess amount of adhesive used to hopefully seal up any uneven spots on the uncut adhesive, leaving a crappy view from the back. Windshield frame scratches result from impatient use of a reciprocating saw with a paddle-type cutter blade. A good shop will use paint stir sticks or plastic spreaders in the glass channel to prevent the blade from cutting into the paint. Once the frame is gouged up, touch up is not a good route. Touch up on a scratch doesn't hold up as well as touching up a chip. When the touch up flakes off, corrosion will creep underneath the paint film on the pinch weld flange, causing the windshield bond to fail. A strongly bonded glass is IMPERATIVE for glass retention and proper airbag operation on the passenger side in case of an accident. It sounds as though you need a frame refinish, and a total complete step-by-step glass replacement that would be UNDETECTABLE from OEM. This is easily obtainable by a capable, professional shop. Best of Luck!!

On a side note, just got a call from the dealer. $291 and some change. Ugh. "Just-Empty-Every-Pocket" anyone?
Your insurance company can be your best friend in this situation. Call your company or agent and file a comp claim. Your company will be on them for reimbursement, believe me. A good installation is imperative for your vehicles serviceability and your safety. Your company wants the job done economically and CORRECTLY. Never settle for anything less- NEVER. On a scale of 1 to 10, a glass replacement is a 1 in the repair business. After nearly 40 years in the body shop business, I know.
Is this it? If so this wouldn't apply (unfortunately)
