Won't start, won't take a jump just clicks...
Far removed from my dorm days I was thinking as I was posting if it was really necessary to remove both leads, your post confirmed my thoughts. I know about the spark danger and have seen video of it happening but you've experienced a good bit of life, have you ever had a battery let go? I am not trying to build a case that it can't / won't happen just interested in a story where it did happen.
If I don't have the protective gear, and have to reconnect, I turn my head, so if it does explode, it won't damage my exceptionally good looking face.
Were it me, I would pull the terminals off battery, clean both battery poles, then clean both wire terminals (soak in mix of baking soda & water, then wire brush). While doing this, charge the battery up.
Reconnect the terminals, & give it a try.
Respects,
Richard

I have the same problem. So far I have not fixed it yet. You might want to take a look at this thread:

I have not been stranded yet, but I just put the trans in "N" and it starts right up. Others let the jeep roll forward a few feet & retry.

I recently had a similar problem in my manual 07 unlimited. I severely depleted the battery winching a jeep off the bottom of a lake, then drove the jeep from south Louisiana to Maryland in dead winter. Next morning, dead jeep. Had to leave for military duty elsewhere, and when I got back to MD this past week, same problem with single click no start. Battery tested good at autozone, but I bought a red top anyways. Problem solved. haven't had any trouble starting it since...
I think I either damaged a cell or caused an adverse reaction in the battery acid. For whatever reason it tested fine under a load, but the new battery solved the issue...
