UPDATE: Texas Jeep Hackers Caught in Suspected Car Theft Ring

Jeep Hackers

It’s clear that concerns about someone hacking into your Jeep and taking control of the wheel while you’re driving should be the least of your worries.

Sure, as the Uconnect hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek proved when they remotely steered a 2014 Cherokee into a ditch, those kind of vulnerabilities should not be taken lightly. Still, the duo’s highly publicized exercises don’t come close to the kind of hacking that poses a much more immediate threat to Jeep owners, as highlighted in a recent Motor Authority report.

Nope, the thing that Jeep owners need to be concerned about most is a trend where thieves are hacking their way into the vehicles, so as to steal them. In fact, last Friday, police in Houston arrested a pair of hackers they believe are responsible for stealing 30 Jeep and Dodge vehicles in Texas, which were subsequently shipped to Mexico.

Apparently, a surveillance video that spied the two culprits in action was just what local authorities needed to catch the hackers. But it does little to prevent others from trying to pull off the hacking maneuvers if it can be done as easily as it appears in the clip below.
