Default CoolTech Gate Mount

So I installed a Cool Tech Gate Mount antenna. Comes with a four foot Firestik. Pretty slick. It tucks behind the spare and uses the existing threaded bolt holes. Here are some pics.

I am pretty happy with it. Now if you flip the L bracket the antenna can be 7.5 inches higher. One miss was that the crimp connection provided was not 5/16" diameter. I had to use one that I had. No biggie. This was for the ground. They want you to ground the bracket to the metal of the inside, not the metal of the tailgate.

Looks good, I am thinking of this same set up. How much space is there between antenna and spare tire. I have 285/70/17 on stock wheels, a little wider than your stock tires, think it will fit? Also what cb did you get?Click image for larger version

I am trying to keep things simple for the CB. I just got the Midland 75-822 handheld. I have an older Cobra unit that I may play around with.

As an update......I expected a better signal. Just to be sure, I tested continuity between the shield and the core wire. Unfortunately, it showed continuity. I am thinking there must be a problem within the cable. I know my install is not the problem as I even tested continuity at the firering. With a lead on each ring, I had continuity.

You can see in the graphic above what the internal wiring is. So when I touched the green and red there was continuity. Just an FYI, there was no CB connected to the other end.

I shot an email to CoolTech so we will see what they say.

The antenna is pretty darn close to the tire. If you had aftermarket wheels with more backspacing I would think you would be OK. Not sure about bigger tires on the stock wheels.

Then you are the man I need to talk to, I am trying to decide between the midland 75-822 and the cobra 75(both hand held units) I am leaning towards the midland. Have you tried the midland with the stock rubber antenna? I don't need a lot of range just trail riding. It would make it a lot simpler if no external antenna is needed for short range. My tire is pretty tight on the rear carrier, I actually had to cut the rubber Isolator on the tire carrier so the tire would sit flush. My rims have the stock wheel dimensions so I think the antenna will be to close?

CoolTech responded right away that I probably have a bad cable. They are sending out another one. I'll update as soon as it is installed.

OK! So the new cable is installed and working good. I have not had a chance to test the range between two Midland handheld units yet but will do so shortly. Thumbs up to Cool Tech for sending out a replacement right away!!!! Very classy!

Going with this same setup, I would be interested to hear how you like it after running everything for a while.
