Default How to remove your transfer case / 4wd knob

I bought new knobs for my transmission and transfercase levers from drake offroad. The instructions for taking off the stock auto knob were spot on, but the transfercase knob removal instructions just said to pull really hard. After about 10 minutes of almost pulling the entire linkage off the transfercase I thought there must be an easier way. I popped the top of the knob off where the rubber and plastic meet. Not the very top with the lettering on it, but the plastic part underneath it. In the pictures I have cut the rubber piece off...this does not have to be done...I did it out of frustration trying to get the knob off. The pictures are after the knob was taken off so If somebody wants to feel free to add on the actual removal from the shaft then do so.

Imagine the rubber still on

Pop the top off by sticking a flathead screwdriver betwen the plastic and rubber

Remove the metal clip

After the clip is removed the knob will slide right off

Hopefully this saves some frustration

The key to good results is a quick forcefull tug, try straddleing the console with a leg on either side for even better results.

That sounds like a real good way to give yourself a nut shot. The method does sound like it would work but I wouldn't do it without a cup on.

I followed off road evolution's instructions..

Basically grab it and pull as hard as you can, but while you do that also twist it from side to side. Came right off.

Funny. This is what I've been telling my wife now for 14 years!

Great write-up! Thanks.

I changed my 4wd knob for the Drake off-road knob today. The shift knob on the 2010's appears to be slightly different then the older 07-08's.

1. Stick a flathead screw driver between the top medallion and the rubber sleeve. Pop off the top. Remove the small round metal clip with the screw driver [the flat one pictures above appears to be for older models]
2. Secure a pair of large vice grips around the shift knob.
3. Use rubber mallet to hammer up the vice grips and twist at the same time.
4. Swear a couple times and it will eventually come off.
5. Attach new knob.

Default Holy crap!!!!!

After about 3 days on a 2010 ... By the way does not have a retaining clip... All you have to do is pull .... Really, really, really, really hard. I almost thought I was going to pull the transmission/ transfer case through the floor. Finally it popped off, almost gave me a black eye.
