Jeep Apple CarPlay: Getting Hands-on with iPhone-connected Tech

Apple CarPlay

Apple Music & Maps

Apple Music and Maps seem to be the only apps that are more permissive when it comes to touch interaction. Alas, it is so much more fun to say, “Hey Siri…play ‘Alone’ by Marshmello,” then promptly get your EDM fix for the day. Still instant gratification, if you ask me.

Apple Maps, on the other hand, is even cooler in the in gratification sector. If you use the app, then it already has  learned a good deal about your driving habits. It offers location suggestions based on your daily routines, including restaurants or stores along the way. Alternatively, it will give you ETAs on locations based on your calendar events, too. Finally, it will show you fuel/charging locations when it senses that you are running low on fuel. All Fiat-Chrysler vehicles equipped with CarPlay will soon support third-party navigation and other apps going forward once iOS 12 drops in September.

One thing I notice is that despite the CarPlay interface taking up such a massive amount of screen real estate, you still have an option to go back to the UConnect system in case you need to use its native apps. This is a nice touch on Jeep’s part, as this is one aspect where the user experience inevitably gets clunky.

So what do you all think? Is CarPlay enough of a sell for you to finally retire your old JK and embrace modernity? Or is this all still a little too techy for your blood? Let us know in the forums.
