Looks Like Jeep Is Ditching the Idea of Made in America

It seems that the push to make Jeep a global brand is coming at somewhat of an expense – namely, the idea that the ‘ole U.S. of A can’t stake the same kind of claim on the iconic nameplate that is has in the past, not when it comes to producing the SUVS.

Okay, now that I think about it, it all could be coming at a huge expense, depending on how important “Made in America” is to you as Jeep owner, which I imagine is huge for some of you here at JK-Forum.

With the addition of the Cherokee and new Renegade, the Internet has been abuzz about the fact that Jeeps will now be made on four continents, as highlighted in a recent Detroit Free Press report.

The Renegade is already being built at factories in Italy and Brazil. By the end of the year the Cherokee will be built in China. And Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is planning to start reassembling the Jeeps in India this year from kits produced in other places around the world.

Now, I’m certainly no huge Donald Trump fan, but it appears that the off-and-on presidential candidate might have been on to something back in 2012 when he said, “Chrysler wants to send all Jeep manufacturing to China – and will,” as highlighted in a Wall Street Journal report.

Let’s just hope that the next-gen Wrangler stays planted right here at home.
