It looks like hacking Jeeps isn’t the only trend being spawned by all the new technology packed into the vehicles.

Thieves in Michigan have been breaking into Jeeps to steal those touch-screen units that have been a huge interior selling point for the brand. During a recent weekend in Detroit’s downtown area, more than 20 of the high-tech units were stolen out of Jeeps and other Chrysler vehicles, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

Apparently, the thieves are breaking the rear side-door windows of the Jeeps because they are made of the same shatter-resistant material as the windshield, which makes it easier to break in without making a noise.
Henry Jones, owner of a local glass repair company in Detroit, describes the process.

“They pry back, leaving a telltale dimple, and it pops the window with little or no noise,” said Jones, adding that with this method, as long as the door isn’t opened, the car alarm isn’t tripped. “You never impacted the vehicle for the (alarm’s) shock sensor to pick it up.”

Scary, right?
