I don't know of any official ones, on the big island. But there are a bunch of dirt roads, in various states, on the south point. I would also hit Waipio Valley area. I pulled off the road on the way out as well, took a road up the mountain. There are places all over. Just go explore.

Thanks, I know the Waipo valley is high on the list. I also plan on driving up Mauna Kea.

There are some sugar cane roads on the north of that go to the cliffs overlooking jaws. slick as snot when it's wet. Not really challenging but an awesome spot to watch the surf and climb around the cliffs.

Nice. We may check it out if I decide to grab a rental today. We're staying at the grand wailea

Just got back. I rented a wrangler in Lanai to take a look around. The munro trail was closed . While it looked ok, the jeep company said no go. We took a look at ship wreak beach and valley of the gods (lots of red dirt here). Both are really easy, but fun. It was nice to be back in a real jeep after renting the jeep patriot. There looks to be a 4x4 road up to polipoli park on the side of the volcano. A lot of switchbacks. Wish I could have driven up there to check it out.

note: we were warned to be careful of the locals on local 4x4 dirt roads.

On the big island, we ended up hiking into the waipi'o valley. Man, is that steep. Piece of cake for a 4x4 though. The road is paved. At the bottom is a dirt road with a couple of big mud puddles. Looked to be about 1 - 1 1/2 ft deep with some rocks. We didn't make it up to Mauna Kea. You can drive a regular car up to the observation area (about 10K ft), but need 4x4 after that. Plenty of snow on it when we were there. As usual, the car rental companies don't want you to take their vehiocles offroad.

Wow, we are in lanai too. Where are you staying? I planned to rent a jeep today to go to shipwreck beach and valley of gods, but decided to stay on the resort instead.
