Hello all,
I saw a few threads about carrying kayaks on Jeeps but I am interested in learning on how to pick a good kayak.

1) I have no knowledge about them, even though already went out on a couple paddlings
2) I am looking for using it on lakes and ocean
3) no plans for white water
4) may take my 4 years old son with me
5) do not mind buying used
6) want something comfortable for hours of fun, not struggle with a bad product

I see prices ranging from $500 to $3000+ but now sure they are worth the difference

Since I am planning to bring my son I believe I have to get one of those tandem models?

Are there models and/or forums you recommend?

I have a cobra tandem ocean kayak and love it! We have had it for 9 years and have never tipped it over in the ocean no matter the wave size. We have also had sea lions bump us and sea otter try to climb up on it and we never tipped. It would be ideal for bringing a kid along. One tip, buy something bright, like our yellow one so boats and other people can see you! Also make sure you get the optional watertight hatches. Not only are they handy to keep things dry while kayaking, but you can store everything in the kayak at home and when hauling it.
