Default 3rd Light Removal...Legal in Ontario?

So I'm looking at getting some muds in the spring when I get back to working and I was thinking that I'm only going to go with the 4 tires route and taking off the spare and carrier...is it legal in Ont to run with no 3rd light? I know that might seem like a stupid question, but I wouldnt know!! Thanks guys!

No it is not illegal, the requirement is two rear facing intermitant red lights with dual fillament....so when they are on for night driving, they must get brighter when braking......

The third light is strictly for safety, so feel free to remove it, however, be warned most motorists have trained themselvs to look for the overhead third light to activate indicating a braking environment.....so, your chances of being in a collision from rearward impact would definitely increase.

There are third light mods available for larger spare wheel appilcations as well out there.....take a look around, I've seen quite a few, including LoD products.

Hmmmm...thats a very good point...my whole things is just as a student, the money is kind of hit or miss between when i'm working and when i'm in school...so I figured it would be cheaper to get 4 tires, rather then 5...and the spare would get a ton of flak...so thats why I was curious, but you raised a good point!

Also, is "FOURLO" the new goodie provider?! I can't wait for the site to be up so I can imagine what its like to get things in CDN dollars!!

I would honestly save the cash and get 5 tires....get the full-size spare, if you do end up trail riding, or even just road riding and you get a flat on your new tires and try and put on the stock smaller spare, you'll be driving all weird and thats not good for a number of components.

Four Lo is the new thing, I beleive they are available for orders right now. Go to the temp site and just email them for a quote.

Ya that was the thing, I was debating whether I should hold off for a full size spare, or whether I should just tough it out and hope that a can of fix-a-flat and CAA could help...

I know that running the spare wouldn't be a good idea, thats why I thought about taking it off! Do you think the tailgate could handle a 35" mud tire?

Yep. 35 is the max I would squeez on there. I've seen 40 on one before, but the gate rattles lie its about to fall off.

Personally I have a 34.5" on my gate since last winter and its holding perfectly.

Shouldn't be an issue.

You officially only need one tail lamp in Ontario.

Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

62. (1) When on a highway at any time from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavourable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 150 metres or less, every motor vehicle other than a motorcycle shall carry three lighted lamps in a conspicuous position, one on each side of the front of the vehicle which shall display a white or amber light only, and one on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red light only. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (1).

You can after all use hand signals for brakes during the day time. All manufactures must make cars with the 3 light design now, but it isn't illegal to have less. That being said, if you get in a crash, your insurance company will own you, as you make your vehcile "less safe" than it was originally.

Cheers
