If your diff oil is black you should definitely change it. It is super easy. Project jk gas multiple easy to follow write ups. I've never been a grease monkey type (although the jeep is encouraging me to learn) and I had no problem. Plus, it's a great excuse to buy tools.

It takes no time and is a piece of cake... You can get the gear oil/diff fluid from Crappy Tire.

I do mine atleast 2 times a year and I'm a desk jockey....

Takes longer looking for the drain plug in whatever you're using to catch the oil then it does to change it.

well found the problem. when my mech. changed the oil in the front he did not take into count the solid diff cover fill hole is higher then stock. so filling like normal filled it to the top of the axle shaft. oil over pressurized and no where to go but up the vent tube. Glad that is all it is. yep fill hole is 1-1 1/2 " higher then stock diff. cover.

Just did mine, all you need is a standard 3/8" ratchet with the 3" extension (easier), and no bit... the sqare fits directly !. You get 3 liters of 75W140 synthetic Qacker Stake oil for $20 each at the Crappy Tire. With standard covers, just fill until it start to drip back. Rear takes more than front. Find the drain plug under the diff and fill by the top one you see on the cover. See the write-up in this forum's link, it is as easy as it looks. For $10 I also got a platic catch pan, and after pouring the old oil in a recycling container, I trew the pan in the garbage... this oil stinks !! No way I am keeping that in my garage !!! So total cost was $80 with the taxes, and half an hour !!
