Default Why are we doing this?

Meet Josie Basta, warrior princess.

Josie Basta was a perfectly normal 7 year old girl until October 2, 2010. Her parents thought she might have just another good old run of the mill bug making her sick, but her Mom, Marge (AKA Snaggy in certain company) soon noticed that Josie’s heart seemed as though it was trying to beat its way out of her chest. Off they went to Chester County Hospital. Within 48 hours, Josie was transported to A.I. DuPont Nemours Children’s Hospital in Delaware where she was diagnosed with myocarditis, an inflammation of the major muscles of her heart which had caused the chambers of her heart to become enlarged and was severely impeding her heart’s ability to pump blood out to her body. Within a week, it became clear she would need a heart transplant; that's some heavy stuff for a 7 year old girl to handle.

In order to keep Josie alive long enough to receive the precious gift of her new heart, she would need some help. On the night of October 14th, 2010 Josie underwent the surgical implantation of a device called a Berlin Heart Pump. At the time, the device, which has since been approved by the FDA, was considered an experimental device. Josie only managed to get approval for the procedure through something called "compassionate use" which means that without this heart pump, Josie would not have survived long enough to receive her new heart. Josie's father would begin a successful crusade to ensure the device would obtain FDA approval, part of which included testifying before congress about the efficacy of this lifesaving device.

Josie's heart stopped more than once during the procedure to install the BHP. Almost immediately after the surgery was wrapped up, Josie’s vitals began to stabilize. Over the course of the next year, she remained in the hospital, doing her best to adjust to the impossibly heavy burden of fighting for her life until she could get her new heart. She battled infection after infection with a grit and determination that would have made General Patton proud.

Josie's parents endured three false starts, each time believing that the perfect heart had arrived, only to have hopes dashed by something giving the surgical team reason to believe this was her perfect heart. After all they had been through together; her surgeons would take no chances with this angelic warrior’s life. Finally. September 09, 2011, in a bittersweet victory, Josie’s perfect heart was transplanted with great success.

Josie remained at AI DuPont Nemours until Halloween 2011 when she finally returned home to a kickapoo warrior’s welcome, though this was hardly the end of Josie’s journey. The mountain of medical bills and a lifetime of anti-rejection medications will continue to tax her family financially for some years to come.

That is why we, the Jeepers for Josie will continue to get together to help raise funds that we will donate to the charitable donation account setup in Josie’s name. We were able to raise $3,500.00 last April and we are hoping to raise at least $5,000.00 for her this October, but we’re going to need your help!!

JFJ II: 10.27.2012

JFJII will be a rain or shine event at the Pic A Lilly Restaurant and is open to all 4x4 street legal vehicles with proof of insurance. The event will be a gps scavenger hunt of sorts, with prizes based on the number of stations visited and some good ol luck of the draw. We will be wheeling around the Wharton State Forest area in NJ. These are named dirt roads and should only be used by vehicles that are legally permitted to do so.

Once you begin your scavenger hunt, you will be expected to adhere to all local laws and ordinances. Anyone who is witnessed engaging in ANY illegal activity will be warned once. ONCE. Your second warning will come from the people telling you to leave. That's all encompassing, so consider this BEFORE signing up. There is a very bright spotlight on vehicles in Wharton these days. DO NOT disappoint in the impression we leave with the Park Service.

That said, we want some accountability here. Because that's how we roll. In order to pre-register, you need to send me a PM requesting paypal info. I'll provide it and confirm here once funds are received.

Preregistration and ALL available JFJII perks are $10 cheaper up until 10/13. That's considered Pre-Registration. We'll honor any registration or orders for shirt/Swag orders up until 1159hrs on 10.12

PLEASE REMEMBER: When sending paypal funds, please ensure you send your funds as a gift (which is what all this essentially is for Josie) and specify the size for your shirt(s) in the comments section. If you forget, please make sure you note your shirt size when sending me your "I should now be registered" pm.

There are multiple levels of pre-registration:

***Pre-registration for JFJII closes on October 13th @ midnite***

CURRENT SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: (Subject to change)
10:00 AM - EVENT REGISTRATION
Registration cutoff is at 10:30 so it is strongly recommended you register in advance. For those who are on time, there will be fresh baked goodness available from Ward's Pastry in Ocean City, NJ - so get there early!!

11:00 AM - SHORT DRIVER'S MEETING
Do not miss the driver's meeting
No meeting, no run.
No joke.

11:30 AM - LINE UP
We'll be classifying Jeeps into groups based on capability - We apppreciate that you may want to ride with your friend who has a JK with Dana 60's and 42" tires, but if you're rolling in a stock YJ, it ain't happening.

11:45 - PREP FOR ROLL OUT

12 NOON - ROLL OUT

5:00 PM - RALLY BACK AT THE PIC FOR A CATERED DINNER!
The Pic will be providing a dinner of pulled pork, wings and salad (drinks are on you guys) after the wheelers get back to the restaurant.

5:30 PM - GIFT BASKET PRESENTATION AND PRIZE AWARDS

7:00 - WRAP UP AND ROLL BACK TO CAMP

Speaking of camp...
CAMPING:
We will be reserving a block of campsites in nearby Wharton State Forest. PRE-REGISTRATION in the event will secure you a spot for the weekend.

If for one reason or another, you cannot register for the event or can't make it to JFJ but would still like to camp, please paypal me $25 for the weekend ASAP. This will cover a camper +1. As noted above, kids under 12 are STILL free. For once.

In order to reduce potential friction between campers in the group, we ask that our late and loud crowd (you know who you all are) please head toward the far corner of the site farthest from the road upon arrival and the quieter, more family-oriented campers please setup closer to the road nearest to the Batona Campground sign. This should leave PLENTY of space between the two groups, thus maintaining a hopefully peaceful atmosphere for all in attendance all weekend long.

Wharton State Forest Camping Info
NOTE: ALCOHOL IS NOT PERMITTED IN WHARTON STATE FOREST. PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY

All wheelers participate at their own risk. JFJII assumes no liability for any and all damages sustained before, during or after the event, so don't be a knucklehead!
