Default OBX corolla beach entries

I am heading down to OBX in a few months and am trying to figure which is the furthest south beach entry in Corolla. I know you can't drive on the beach in Duck, so I am trying to figure out where I can get on just after Duck and take the beach all the way up to corolla across from the lighthouse. Are there any maps of the beach entries available?

I know I can get on at the 4x4 area past the lighthouse. I am more trying to figure out the stretch that is corolla, just past duck, all the way to the lighthouse. It appears to be a 5 mile stretch or so that I want to fish and am just trying to figure the south most entry point.

For example, if I am at the lighthouse and go on the beach and head south, how far can I go before I must exit the beach (and what is that exit) so that I don't end up illegally driving on Ducks beach where driving is not permitted?

I am no local for sure, but the only places I know are the 4x4 area I mentioned, which exits at the end of rt 12, and down by Hatteras ..
If u go up to corova beach make sure if u go off the beach and u encounter water u check how deep it is... trust me on this.... here s a pic of my stock jk on that beach.

Here's horses u will see... Spanish mustang's.

This is off the beach.

Sweet pics. I will definatley be checking out then 4x4 area.

Pre-jeep I was surf fishing in corolla and saw quite a few trucks on the beach. I know from checking things out in my car that you can enter accross from the lighthouse and the Timbuck II shopping center but am still wondering where the southern most corolla entry is. If no one knows, I will figure it out when I am down there and report back.

Default Corolla Surf fishing

12 North dumps you out onto the beach access just above the lighthouse as everyone has mentioned. At the beach access turnout there is a big 15+ foot fence that extends 75 feet into the ocean so that nobody can drive around it at the lowest tides. The fence has a small gate for pedestrians but is designed to prevent driving further south on the beach from Carova and Swan Beach to Corolla & Duck.

Those ponies look familiar...

Last year when I was researching OBX for our first rental, I too found some info indicating vehicles are permitted beach access for the sole purpose of actively surf fishing, on a seasonal basis only.

I think once the summer comes, Corolla & South is off-limits to vehicles because there are thousands of folks who forgot to bring their Jeeps :P

You can see the giant fence in last months issue of Four Wheeler Magazine, as they did a article on some 'other' brand of rigs.

If you have an automatic transmission, make sure you use 4Lo. JK torque converters do not lockup in 4Hi until 3rd gear.
Last year I cooked my auto tranny in the back dunes, doing 15mph taking pictures of horses and geocaching (80 degrees with a breeze). When in 4Lo the torque converter is always locked.
My Lesson: Use 4Lo and let the auto transmission cycle the gears.

There is 15 miles of open beach north of Corolla, and even more south towards Hatteras. If your anywhere near Swan or Seagull Beach in August, shoot me a PM.

Are there any trails there or is it just beach driving?

hmm..... Maybe a good time to invest in a winch. Nothing worse than being stuck in an unfamiliar place. I think I'm heading there with some guys from work next week. It sounds like a nice place to see.

Don't worry. Tow Truck Jim (or Joe. The locals call him something like that) lives out there. He'll only charge an arm just to hook up to you (about $300) then the cost goes up from there. That's how he pays for his house out there. What a life. The cleaners also "clean up" too. They get paid by the homeowners to clean the houses after the party vacationers leave and get to keep whatever they find (mostly liquor) but A LOT of it. They party with Tow Truck Joe.
