I'm no Microsoft fan, but I've got to say that Internet Explorer 8 (currently available for download in beta form) is way better than v7... and for me, way better than Firefox 3.0.
I was running Firefox 3.0 for awhile, but my computer kept locking up after prolonged web browsing (especially after visiting Flash-heavy sites). I read an article where they compared Firefox's memory management (in particular, the way it handles Flash) against IE8, and the article suggested that some Firefox users would have system freeze-ups because Firefox was inefficient at memory management. I decided to test that theory as the reason behind my system issues, and downloaded IE8... and it's been a huge improvement. I can leave my computer going for days now without issue, so that seems to bear out the theory. Just something worth considering if you find Firefox lacking in the long-term.
Oh, and as far as spyware goes, you'd be doing yourself a favor by trying Spybot Search & Destroy - it's free, and it works pretty well.

I'm still running into issues... This makes sense.

However, I was under the impression that running Firefox is safer than IE-
MJS_Jeep_888, what is your input on that?

Based strictly on Spybot scan results (which I'll admit is a flawed comparison, since I immunize my system after every scan), I've seen less spyware make its way through my defenses when using IE8 than when using Firefox. However, this doesn't prove that IE is better than Firefox or vice-versa.
Bottom line: I'm only sharing what worked well for me, but am by no means an expert on web security. Use at your own risk!
From what I've read, IE8 is a vast improvement over IE7 in the security department... I can't say for sure that's it's better than Firefox in that regard, but I haven't been hit with any viruses, and spyware that makes it through is pratically nil.

With FF3 there have been problems with the anti-phishing/malicious site filters and the way the list of harmful sites are downloaded to the urlclassifier file and then compared against the sites you visit. If you see the FF is using up all of your CPU and memory resources and really bogging down, I know a few things that can help fix it.
Try deleting the file urlclassifier2.sqlite first (leftover from FF2 profile). Make sure Firefox is closed first, then run a search for the file on your hard drive, it will most likely be in your C:\Documents and Settings\your name here\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. Delete that file, then restart Firefox.
If that doesn't work, ping me - I have a few other things you can try. But this is the change that really fixed it for me, no problems at all with FF ever since.
