Fellow MN members, any trouble with law regarding your Jeep?
Howdy all, have a 2014 Jeep JKU Rubicon I purchased here a while back and looking to finally let it grow into some 37"s tires. My options are narrow down to either 4.5" synergy long or short arm kit with stock fenders or a Synergy 3" lift with flat fenders. Of course only problem is I'm going to be likely pushing it out of the legal gray area regarding bumper height if I go with the 4.5" lift but if I go flat fenders than of course will have trouble with tires sticking out past the fenders, I know of the bushwhacker flat flares and really want to stay away from those. With all that being said, who has been pulled over for either bumper height law or tires sticking out passed the fenders. I'm just wondering if they will be more prone to check bumper height laws or tire/fender laws and being this will be a DD don't want to be hassled or worried about ticket every time. Also know it really depends on the cop and how you drive, seems more like state patrol has it out for vehicle statues over city cops. So if you have any recommendations or experiences your self please share. Thanks and hope to get to meet some fellow Jeepers here to wheel with.
I have been pulled over once in a lifted Jeep because of equipment and it was because the city cop wanted to know where I got my bumper because he wanted one for his XJ. I think if you drive normal and don't give them any reason to pull you over you will be fine. The fender law in Minnesota is very vague and most guys that have fought their tickets have won. It is worded that you need to have the tires covered as far as practical. Well what does that mean? It isn't practical for me to have fenders that stick out way past my tires that get ripped off by trees on the trail so they need to make the law more specific. You can't have the lowest portion of the front bumper more than 25" off the ground and you can't alter a vehicles suspension system which includes the tires more than 6 inches. Some stock pickups have bumpers that are over 25 inches off the ground and how does a cop know how much lift you have.
I personally like a lower center of gravity so I would lean towards the 3" lift and flat fenders. I have Bushwhacker Flat Fender Flares and I have not had any problems with them. And I know lots of other guys that run them too. No they aren't as strong as steel or aluminum but they are more flexible. I have rubbed mine up against more than a couple of trees and they are holding up fine.
