I still want to get another handgun. Just can't make up my mind. I want something for bear protection while in the tent, as well as something for the home. I've heard that some guides, and such are now using the 10mm up here for bear protection. I've read a little about it and they say it hits a bit harder than the 45. I was pretty much sold getting a 45 until I heard this. I saw a S&W in 10mm the other day in the gun shop, but it was damn near $900. Do you think the 10mm is worth it for what I'm looking for?

10's are nice. I have a few 45 acp's and bought a S&W Perf Center 44 mag about 8 years ago. I'd hate to get hit with a heavy 44 mag load... I bought the revolver as I didn't want any semi-problems, as this thing only come out when you need it... I don't think you'll go wrong with a 10MM, either.

Well.....a few years back I sold my Smith 629 stainless in 44mag. It was a great gun but I just didn't use it that much anymore, like I probably won't use the new handgun that much either.....I just don't target shoot like I used to.
The 44 was nice but not a must have. So i'm just looking for some input on the 10s as opposed to the 45s. I probably should just look at some ballistic tables.

I like 45 too. The 10mm hit pretty hard. One day I plan on getting a .357 sig, it is a pretty good round although it has a higher velocity than the 45. Not sure I would use 10mm for home defense depending on your area.

For a bear in a tent, I'd go with a 500 S&W mag... Wouldn't want any part of a bear getting in there with my me!

The 10 mm round is a large powerful round. It is apt to over penetrate causing dangerous secondary target problems. A lot of police department don't allow the carry of a 10 mm because it is so fast. There is a lot of difference between using it for home defense and bear defense. JMO.

Maybe a good option would be a .50 cal,, The 50 built on a colt 45 frame is very nice and said to have serious stopping power... but with a .50 you'd expect that..
