New Home Defense addition
Been looking for a nice short barreled shotgun for home defense. For the longest time I've wanted a Winchester 1300 NRA Defender, but after all the calls to the gund dealers in the Eastern Pa area, I've not been able to find any. Found one through a gun broker in NM, and he wanted $1400. The thing sold for $377.99. At any rate, I'm happy now because yesterday I found a Mossberg 500 Persuader. Picked it up last evening after work. It's a matte black 18.5" barrel with composite black stock, pump, and pistol grip. Holds 6+1. Was out today and put 20 rounds out for testing. 10 with the stock and 10 with the pistol grip. It feels good and shoots great.
Already have a parkerized heat shield on order and looking for the flash supressor. Here's a pic of one fitted out.
This is the kind of weapon that doesn't need to be fired if someone enters the home uninvited. The mere site woud scare the shit out of me.

Looks nice enough(aside from muzzle break), but a 12ga. from the hip could be tough to shoot repetitively. Id stick w/ the stock, easier follow up shots and better muzzle control.

I agree that with the stock you have much better control.
I've had a Remmington 870 for the longest and love it, however I had the urge for a new shotgun and one with an 18" barrel strictly for home defense. Since I could not find a Winchester 1300 NRA Defender, I opted for the Mossberg. Having shot 10 rounds with it using the pistol grip, I think I'd like to try the brake. to be honost, I don't even know if there's any to be had, but I know for sure that the 500 with 18.5" barrel and pistol grip, kicks pretty hard.
I would have rather had the gun in 20 gauge or even a 410, however there again, there were just none to be had, so I jumped on the 12 the day I found it. As was posted the brake looks queer, but on the other hand think of how queer the overall gun looks, from the wrong end. I know it would scare the hell out of me, and that big brake would add a bigger pucker factor.

You should have ordered the winchester, what you have looks awesome but I have the Winchester and WOW. It sits next to the bed everynight and it looks mean just sitting there. It also makes one hell of a deer gun.

I bought the Mossberg "Watch Dog" a while back. It's has an 18" barrel. It comes fitted from Mossberg with a flashlight and laser light on the bottom tube. I gave $350 brand new from my local dealer! Can't beat that!
