Shotgun for home defense.
I wouldn't call it research as much as surviving life experiences
Personal opinion here, but the only reason any home owner should go "sweeping" their house is to grab kids or other family members. Without massive amounts of training and a regular routine of practicing urban tactics with professionals you are putting yourself in serious jeopardy to save a tv and knickknacks. I have always believed that the best thing anyone can do is immediately get behind your bed facing the door with the gun pointed at it. While you are watching the door dial 911 and set the phone down, start yelling that you are an armed individual and that the intruder needs to leave your home at "address". We lost extremely well trained people everyday to sweeping homes and buildings, it's hard work for teams that know what they are doing, much less civilians who are pumped to high hell on adrenaline and still probably groggy.

Mossberg 930 SPX semi-auto 7+1 2.75 or 6+1 3" rounds, you can empty it in under 2 sec! As long as the family is safe upstairs with me, after I called the cops and yelled out "I have a gun and have called the cops", I would hang at the top of the stairs and if the shitheads were dumb enough to try to come up the stairs, I wouldn't hesitate to defend my family.
Stay safe.

Giving up an "entrenched" position in your bedroom to go slicing pies in a dark house is not sound decision making, unless, as Imrahil stated, you need to go protect kids or other family members in another room.
That would be exactly my plan too. Might cycle it and make the sound do the talking

00 buck speaks even louder. I wouldn't expect, much less count on, the sound of a pump to deter anyone that is already commited enough to go into a house that is occupied.

Stay safe my friends.
I don't feel bad for the invader but I don't want to kill anyone if I don't have to, that is why I have the first 3 rounds bird, the next 2 are buck and the last 3 are slugs. If I get to the slugs, it's obviously a shitshow and I wouldn't feel one bit bad about using them, but it almost means certain death and that's why the first few are not "certain death" rounds. Hopefully I never have to find out.

No one wants to hurt anyone here, but if it is a choice of them or my wife or them and my son, or even them or me, they better give up right then and there, or kill me first. There will be no bird shot. Again, no decent person wants to hurt another human being, but IMO, a home invasion is an end-game scenario. Please don't take offense to my outspokenness, and don't take me as criticizing your stance, I just believe firmly in self-preservation. Better them than me or my family.

No offense taken my friend. I agree with you on the pure stopping of bird shot but from 5-10 ft, bird shot from a 12 will stop most people in their tracks and I figure having a semi-auto 12, if the intruder is not discouraged after the first shot, you can empty the rest in less than 2 sec.
Since reading your post I have switched my ammo to first 5 buck and the last 3 Winchester pdx1 defenders (make sure the wife and kids are behind you when you fire those) because they will go through walls. I just you can never be too sure. Thanks for the advise Jason.
Be safe
