definitely nothing wrong with Taurus these days. they make a good product now. but Springfield and Glock are like the Honda/Toyota of guns. they are proven, reliable, and will last forever.

Before I even posted this, I was already leaning toward the XDM, but I knew of the Taurus and had heard some good things about it. I also liked the fact that it is 5.25'' barrel verse the XDM which is only 4.5". And of course the price difference was playing a factor. My plan for this pistol is home and range only.
Either way I think I am just going to go for the XDM.

Of the two id deff go xdm. At that price point id go w/ a glock unless you already have one. The xdm does offer more as a safe carry, but you said home/range.
And yes I know the best safety is the shooter, just referring to mechanicals on the guns themselves.

Personally I think you would be fine with either gun. I get a little tired of hearing from everyne "Taurus is crap" though. I wasn't sure about them because of what everyone says, but I ended up buying my girlfriend a Taurus PT-111. That is the gun she picked out because Gander Mountain carries them in pink. Anyways when we were at the range one day I tried shooting hers and I was very pleased with how it shot. I now have a PT-99 and love it. I have heard very good things about the XD's, so don't think I am trying to say the Taurus is better by any means....I am just saying when it comes to Taurus, don't listen to the naysayers that probably won't even touch one because they are made to believe they are crap.
