'84 CJ7 conversion to fuel injection...?
Hey folks, my wife and I just bought an '84 CJ7 with a 6-258 and 5 speed trans and we love it! It runs but needs some work. So after a month of having it and it stalling A LOT, I rebuilt the carburator and want to know if anyone has a ballpark cost on swithing it to fuel injection? It's of course a project and I have plenty of time to do it all myself but I'm told there's a budget to keep to. Haha.. I want it looking sweet and running better...
I saw the Howell TBI conversion article, which was great by the way, but there wasn't any mention of overall parts cost. (other than the Howell kit is half the cost of the Mopar kit)

Fuel injection is a "must" in my opinion When I rebuilt my CJ I decided to go with a TBI Chevy 350. It's a tits setup but ended up costing me WAY more money and time than it would have to rebuild my 304 or a 360 long block I had in the garage and add a Howell setup. That would be the best way to go if you want to save time and money.
Thanks for the help and info. Someone just recomended I pick up a used 4.3liter fuel injected chevy motor from a 80's model chevy. What do you folks think? I wan't put on 6" superlift and run 35's. And gearing of course. MAybe switch froma 5 speed to auto. anyone out there done something like that?

I installed the Mopar kit and couldn't be happier with it! HESCO in Birmingham makes the kit and you can buy it direct from them cheaper than 4WD or Quadratech. The old 258 used to give up at about 3500 RPM. Now it screams right through 5000 still pulling. Actually accelerates UPHILL in 5th gear.
Back when I first bought the CJ I rebuilt the motor and put a Weber carb and MSD on it. You could tell it had a little more power but for the money I dumped in it I was disappointed. After I installed the Mopar MPI kit the test drive blew my socks off! The guy I originally bought it from drove it and thought I had swapped in a V8. It's been up over 13000' passes in CO without checking up.
The big difference between the Mopar and the Howell is the Mopar computer controls the fuel AND the timing and can compensate for altitude etc. The Howell doesn't talk to the distributor and can't adjust as much as the Mopar.

4.0 head and crank, plus factory EFI. Good stroker combo.

I have the Howell unit on my '82 CJ7. (We rebuilt the engine at 185k when we did the restoration of the rig.) It has a more agressive cam, true dualed headers, Clifford intake and will climb anything plus when my pal with a V-8 360 ran out of gas I still had half a tank left. My unit runs great -I had a Weber on it and there's no comparison.
