Default Cj 5 question

Hey guys. Just got a cj5 inherited to me but I can't seem to find the exact year. I have called the tag office it was registered but they couldnt tell me what year it is bc it had not been registered in 10 years. Also called the actual jeep place and they couldnt tell me. Any suggestions or help? VIN is 830515 245452

Alright here we go.

There arent any letters in the VIN?

Lemme do some research for you.

Just FYI, that ain't a VIN, it's a serial number. Odds are you CJ5 pre-dated VIN. VINs first came on the scene in '54... but I am not sure when Jeep adopted them.

I went through a similar experience trying to identify the year of my father's old CJ2-A. Essentially what I did was try and locate listings where people have taken known year CJs and published their serial number. Since serial numbers are, well, serial, this gives you a good reference point for you year.

The next thing I did was look for changes form year to year. These early CJs had a LOT of changes EVERY year. sometimes they were minor, like the location of a dash plate, other times major.

For my father's CJ2-A, what ended up giving it away was the dash plate.

You probably already know this but you can at least identify the year range by some of the body features... i.e.: windshield shape, fenders, tailgate, etc...

Thanks guys for the support. If I use the website there I believe it said it was a '59. . But only first numbers are close to matching but not the ending ones.
