Gears and Axles help!
Hi!
I have 1997 TJ Sahara auto and would like to upgrade my gears to 4.88. How I make sure what axles I have now ( my quess 30 f and 35 r)? So what else do I need whit the 4.88, maybe installation kits for both ends?
I´m running 33 now and want to go 35, are the axles ok with 35 also?

Everybody is going to say it all depends on hard you wheel...But on the other hand it has been proven more than once that a D30 can hold up. David @ Northridge can lead you in a good direction for gears, what you need...
On another TJ forum, lots of people wished they would have went with 5.13 gears instead of 4.88...4wd had a good gear ratio chart in their latest book & it might be online also.

Thanks for your rep. Yes f has 30 and r 35 so the 4.88 is only what I can get to my axles. My off roading is light to med what I do so moving from 33 to 35 might be ok. Or maybe I stay whit 33, cause I have only 2" coil and 1,25" body lifts, so there is not room for 35. I just did put new quick disc from JKS to front so I have to borrow 35 wheel from my friend and try it, but at least I need flat fenders cause I´m wearing stock saharas still.
But If I order 4.88´s what else do I need, installion kits maybe but what kind?

On Northridge website in the D35 you have 4.10 4.56 & 4.88 and would need a install kit or overhaul kit...Here is what Northridge says.
"The perfect kit for any differential rebuild or gear installation. All the parts needed for a quality installation. For new or very low mileage axle assemblies, use the installation kit. For a complete rebuild, use the overhaul kit.
Installation Kits Include:
Pinion nut, Pinion seal, crush sleeve, pinion shims, carrier shims, ring gear bolts, LoctiteTM, marking compound, brush and gasket.
Overhaul kits include:
ALL the above parts PLUS pinion bearings and races, carrier bearings and races.We use TIMKENTM Tapered Roller Bearings to ensure a quality rebuild."
But with your amount of lift...I would stick with 33's unless you go with tube fenders or bigger lift.

Yes, You are right! The current lift does not allow bigger tires unless I get other fenders and I´m running also 1,25" spider spacers so wheels stick out even more now.
Ok, I have to order 4.88 and complete (better) istallation kit for both ends. Too bad that the Northridge does not do international sales so I have to order them somewhere else.

PS. I would like to order new JK Unlimited 2.8 CRD rubicon but in my country
I have to pay close to 70 000 eur ( about 94 000 US dollars ) for that and that is only the basic Jeep PLUS building the rig is gonna cost much more. Thanks to my coverment and all the taxes!!!

Good luck with it! Nothing wrong with TJ's...That D35 might be a weak link, so after you get gears..Might want to start looking around for a kit to beef it up or go junk yard hunting for a D30 or D44 or even a ford 8.8 axle...
Yes, I quess it´s the way to go next and see how the current axles are holding up. Can you tell me what gears are in now, cause I tried to look numbers from axles but could not find it?

Thank´s for Your help. It seems that it is 3.07 or 3.55 which was opt. so actually it does not matter which one it is if I´m going to 4.88 anyway. For three speed auto even the 33 are not working like I wanted to.

There should be a tag on the axle you can run it that way. Another way tel what gears is to Jack up the rear end, mark the tire and the driveshaft with something. Spin the tire one time. If the driveshaft goes around 3 times its 3.07, if it goes around 3 1/2 times it is 3.54. Pretty simple.
If you have 3.07 you will need Gears, Master Install Kits, and Carriers for the front and rear. If you have 3.54 you will need everything but the rear carrier.
Lowest ratio you can get is 4.88.
