Just Bought 98 TJ, Need Tire Info Please!
Hey guys kinda new to the forums, and kinda new to the whole jeep thing...but hey, you gotta start somewhere...i just bought a 98 TJ, everything is stock so far...i had a coouple questions
1) what is the max size of tire i can put on there without having any serious rubbing (i will only be able to offroad occasionally)
2) along with the tire size, what type/make of tire do you guys reccomend, im looking for somthing that can mud, but can still make it on the city streets.
thanks again guys, any reccomendations or tips are greatly apprectiated.

On a TJ your can run 31's offroad, it'll stuff a little but, it wont be too bad....

As far as Tire selection, check out the modified section, lots of threads on this.
I like my procomps xtreme MT's. they seem to do good on mud and rocks.
You can run 31s; but don't bother.

Step 5: enjoy the fact that you only spent a few hundred bucks, but have one of the most off road capable rigs you can buy for the $ you spent.
step 6: view my web site; the guy with the yellow TJ in the Rausch Creek photos has this setup, and he's in some vids.
Serously, it doesn't change your ride much, and allows kick ass off roading.
But if you drive ALOT, it will change your MPG, i would run a 31" daily driver.
***This all assumes you have the 4.0L, if not, sell that jeep, and get one with a real engine. (or swap in a 350)***

If you want to get into more heavy off roading; rocker panels, and skid plates are your best friend!

I was'nt jeepless, we still had my wifes 97 TJ and my 54 willys.. the wifes jeep was nicer anyhow.. and still have them both..

skip the spacer lift, and get a good lift, it'll be worth the money in the end...
He'll I would put a D44 in the rear or an 8.8 before, i would even lift it...
theres nothing wrong with 31's if you run them until your tires are gone, then decide where you wanna go with it...

and i wanted to have the tires stick out of the sides, i heard there is something called wheel spacers? (sorry again i dont know much about this stuff, i have to do more reading) but can you point me in the direction of some good spacers?

yea thats a great way to save some serious cash, thanks for taking the time to walk me through it...but like i said i am only goign to be able to offroad occasinaly, and im a huge newbie to all of this so i dont wanna go mturning my jeep into a monster right off the bat, i gotta work up to it lol, so if i put 31's on, what type of lift do you reccomend for occasional offroading, or will i even need one?

1 Would go with just the 2" lift then, it puts spacers above your springs, and works great for the $, yes for a bit more you can do more, but that changes your springs / shocks / drive angles more, and changes driving. the 2" lift is cheap and VERY effective.
make sure if you do that lift (or any) you get the sway bar disconnects. if you off road without disconnecting, you will pop the joints out of your sway bar links (trust me, i've done it) (the lift puts the sway bar links at a non factory angle, and makes them weaker, the new links will be longer).
I DO NOT suggest wheel spacers for 2 reasons.
1. they weaken the whole setup, you are more likely to break things! they put more force on everything... its just not good if you can avoid it
2. unless you like the dirty as hell look, or can wash your TJ every 30 seconds, you do NOT want the tires out past the flares... it makes a huge mess of the sides...
That kit, as long as you can follow simple directions, can be installed with only the factory jack in your own garage in 3-4 hours... if you've never done it...
With the right tools, 1-2 hours...
being a 1998 you will have a lot of rusted bolts (not bad, just harder)... be prepared with penetrating lube *not wd-40* and a large wrench
