I would think that shouldn't be a problem. I'm no expert, but I believe it's transmitting that has the greatest risk of frying the radio.

Ok that's what I thought too but always welcome a second opinion. Got a piece of shielded ground strap on the way... Should have it tomorrow evening.

You're not the only one I've talked to or seen that used that location. I'm just not sure what else to try I am going to try and get to radio shack this weekend and get a swr meter and o from there but at this point I'll try adding a ground and see what I get...

Maybe I'm missing something here, but how does attaching the mount to plastic provide a ground, without some type of grounding strap or wire to metal?

Because the 3rd brake light isn't made of plastic, it's metal. The main part extends straight up from the tyre carrier and is all metal. The only part that's plastic is the lens. I just went out and checked mine, just to make sure I'm not going senile and sure enough, it's metal all the way up.

Interesting...the third brake light on my 2010 is all plastic. What year is your jeep?

edit: just checked your profile and you have a 2007, did it maybe change between 2007 and 2010?

And more importantly is trouty33's 2014 metal or plastic?

Mine's an 07. TBH, I wasn't sure before I went outside and tapped it. I thought it was but it certainly does look plastic. Have you tried giving yours a tap to make sure?
