Default No problem........

There are 2 fans built into the bottom from the factory to keep it cool, and comes on when/if it gets warm. Been running 2 of these radios for over 2 years with no issues. Been in the Jeep since I got it last July, and on occasion when it is 95+ degrees outside it would come on, and soon as it cools down shuts off.
Anymore questions feel free to e-mail me ljoh487175@aol.com

Just as a reminder Larry......The FCC has been giving the local authority's more room to enforce the "rules". If you happen to get stopped by a cop, and if he has been versed in "the rules" and knows what he's looking at in a radio, you could loose it or maybe even be fined. Just so you know.....

well, I took some practice tests last night out of a 100 page book that a local HAM club has online, but they were all dated 2006 and talked about things like interference with analog NTSC television signals and alot of other stuff that I would think is outdated.

does anyone have other links that might be more current before I try to take the test? Also if I did about 85% on my first practice test, do I need to do alot more work on it, or am I pretty much Good to Go?

Also how much more difficult are the general and extra level tests than the technician? (I'm kind of geeky about this stuff, I will probably never use the expanded capabilities, I just like the information)

I would say you're about ready but would study for awhile longer. Yes, because there is no more morse code testing, the written tests for General and especially Extra start to get a bit more technical, like circuit diagrams and such.. All you have to do is look at the question pool for them and you'll see what I mean.

I also found the amateur band plan on icoms website...

the technician doesn't really allow you to do anything, a little voice on 10m and a little CW on some of the other HF bands...

I'd have to really get a radio that handles bands in the 2M range to really be effective as just a technician...

I haven't had a problem. I run a cobra 148gtl peaked at 40watts with a 300 watts linear and don't have a problem. I run fused #6 wire to the battery. Temp mount on top of the stock radio. I don't use big power much maybe 1 out of 20 times but it's nice when you need it

Dave thanks for the info, and am aware of what goes on as my wife IS a cop. Been in this radio hobby for years, and keep up on what is going on, and am not a ham because I prefer not to be, and have many friends from over the years on the 11 meter band.
Again thanks for your insight.

Just curious Larry as to what your wife says about it? Are in fact the authorities enforcing it in your area..??? I only told you that because this is what has been going around, but I personally have never seen a cop bust somebody for it. I just read somewhere on here where a guy's brother who is a truck driver got busted. And just so you know, because you haven't been around here for very long, I am not the "illegal CB police". In fact I was a freebander bandit for years myself. Talked high power all over the world on 11m. Belonged to clubs all over the world and had all kinds of fun. It wasn't till I got a letter from the FCC that I thought I'd do it legally. And at that time a few other friends of mine had been considering it as well. So we all did. I'm actually very glad I did, because now I have a shack worth of bad ass gear and am really happy with it and how it operates. I really enjoy legally rag chewing with friends all over the world with a station that makes it sometime seem like they're right in the room with me....
PS....btw...Grew up in Tahoe. Been to your neck of the woods lots of times....
