Default CB Radios

so i was just curious as to which CB's everyone has?

im about to purchase one soon, and after searching, seems like most everyone goes with the Cobra 75. some of you also added the 4' firestick.

im stock, so i think something like that might look weird...

any suggestions as to which one i should get and accessories?

I started with a Midland 1001z and a 3' Firestik, but just upgraded to a Cobra 75 and a 4' K40 power whip (I went with the K40 because the store I was at didn't have the Firestik). I like the quick disconnect that the 75 comes with (it's nice to be able to hide it when I'm not using it), and the 4' antenna lowered my SWR quite a bit.

You might want to consider and external speaker. I got mine at Radio Shack for around $20. The mic speaker is a little weak.

Disclaimer - I'm no expert at the CB stuff, just my $.02.

There's a whole forum for this particular topic. The Cobra 75 and FireStik combo seem to be the most common.

Consider how often you will use it - I got a hand-held CB because the reality is I am not going to use it nearly as much as I would like. I did get a mount and ran cable inside to the front seat. But 99% of the time the hand held is in the glove box and the antenna is off the mount and strapped to the roll bar. if I used it more often, I could see getting tired of the hand-held, plugging it in, connecting the cable, and not having a speaker. Just something to consider.

I just went for the Midland 75-822 and am looking at a Wilson 4-footer.

This may sound dumb, but...
What is the difference with all the CBs? I mean, if you use it maybe bi-monthly, wouldn't a basic cb work? Power is the same, 40 channels (some have NOAA, which is a nice feature), volume, etc.... I am sure if you are knowledgable about radio comms, you would enjoy more adjustments just to make sure your buddy is crystal clear when he calls - but for the weekend cb'er, I'd guess a $40 Midland/Uniden/Cobra would satisfy the need?

Edit - I am sure this post will incite anger and rage in those that take CBs serious, which is not the intent. This is written from a guy who prefers to plug and play, not tweak and peak

I've often wondered this myself.

I know some of the higher end units have better squelch auto correction, something Cobra calls "Sound Tracker". Some also have options for NOAA like you mentioned as well as options for a PA system.

I am sure if you can work the bells and whistles, it would be fun/useful. I can hardly operate my blackberry, so i figured bells and whistles were way more than I would ever use....
