Default Custom install materials

So I'm thinking of doing a single DIN flip up nav rather than the Z1, and was looking around at some CBs as well as scanners. I'm thinking of doing a custom job on the console.

I wanted to do some similar in my silvarado but stopped all those plans since I knew I was just going to trade it in the jeep.

My question is, where could I find some of the materials that are used to create the install kids. I dont want to really mold anything and get messy with fiberglass. I'd like to maybe custom cut some of that hard plastic that the mfg's use to make the DIN install kits.

Does anyone know where to get that in larger pieces? I'm thinking I could dremel out my openings by hand to get a real nice custom cut for a single din headunit plus a scanner/cb. I could then put together the backside with some thicker sheet metal or some scrap I'm sure i'll be able to find somewhere and cut.

Any suggestions and/or resources would be appreciated.

I really like the idea, but why not just get the double din unit, and stick the CB under the seat?

Sweet, thanks plugman. I'll wait until my JK comes in to purchase, but I'll definately PM once we get there. In the meantime, anyone else know of an online resource?

The single-DIN kit that's available has a storage hole underneath the head unit. You could just cut this hole out and fab up a bracket and trim piece for your CB to go under the head unit. Might be easier to do this than starting from scratch. This is what I plan to do.

Default Metra Single Din Kit

I have the Metra Single Din kit, if you want it. I bought both single, and double din, not knowing what I was going to install, and they were hard to come by, so I got them. With the single din kit, you have a cool little storage cubby underneath your head unit. You can see it on MetraOnline.com. If you want it, let me know.

Once my JK gets in I'll consider that option, and it would definately be a time saver, but it wouldn't quite give me the completely custom look.

Fortunately, I did find a site that has what I'm looking for. For anyone interested check Select Products, or if anyone has feedback on this vendor I would appreciate it.

I bought some textured (smooth back) ABS plastic sheets and made custom stuff with it. (switch housings) They come in 12" x 24" sheets with thicknesses of 1/16",3/32" or 1/8". $3.50, $4.95 and $7.25 each. Type in "abs sheets" in search box if it doesn't show. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=265-940

Yeah, the other vendor has the same thing - except parts express looks a bit cheaper. thanks for the linkage. Curious, what thinkness would you think would be appropriate for a head unit surround?
