What kind of luck have you guys had with GMRS hand helds out on the trail? not the cheap wal-mart crap but the reliable decent radios.

 

GMRS works well on the trail, but you have to run with other GMRS owner/users to be able to communicate. Have you added the $85 FCC licensing fee into your GMRS equation?

GMRS is great, in some instances better than CB, but the majority of off-roaders are not licensed and are not carrying. If you have a direct-frequency input, it is nice to have access to contact local authorities in case of problems. I have a try-band, 4' CB and handheld FRS/GMRS, and out on the trails, 90% of the chatter is on the CB

 

thanks for the info guys. id prefure less chatter when im trying to comunicate with trail friends. i already have the garmin rhinos
and a pretty nice cb. i dont care for cluter so if i can id like to avoid puting the cb in.

 

We are working on putting together better GMRS infrastructure in the area. Likely this summer we will have great coverage over most of California. Keep an eye on that thread linked above!!
