Enjoy many aspects of Ham Radio - there is something interesting for just about everyone. Currently trying optimize my mobile HF station. See my pics.
I have a VHF/Echolink repeater located at the highest point in the county - 490 feet above Sea level. n4xgirepeater dot net
Building up a home station for up coming sunspot cycle 24. Still only 100 watts.
Got a question - just ask.

Well a few years ago I had a very short stint working the "birds" from here in AK. but it was only because a friend of mine loaned me his 2m SSB mobile rig while he was at work up on the slope for a couple weeks. I have to say I had fun doing it all "freehand", meaning I was using both a 10m yagi as well as a 2m yagi. It was pretty quick hand work trying to point both the rotators at the bird as she came over the horizon. I ended up making about a dozen or so contacts and a couple confirmed. I have to say, I can see how guys get really into it, as it was great fun just the short time I had. Unfortunately I still don't have an SSB 2m rig. So sorry I can't help you out.
Good Luck & All the Best from AK.

Oh and btw....I haven't been in there for quite awhile, but our local "Rat" Shack was carrying a few 10m/12m mobiles for awhile. And I think they even had a big old 10m base rig.
As far as I know, that would be a major undertaking to mod a scanner to transmit. It would need a PA (power amplifier) and finals and that would pretty much be like having a whole other radio.

Radio Shack ought to change their name to "Me Too" - same stuff everyone else has and nothing they don't. The local truck stop has more of a selection (all CB though).
I just got my Tech license last May..KD8IOH. My XYL, Gina, also got her Tech license last March....KD8IDE. The couple that HAM..and JEEP together, Stays Together!!
Great idea to start a thread for us HAM's!! I think there really are alot of us out there! Thanks!!
I now have a Midland CB radio (for some goofy reason the HAM interfered with the Cobra..nasty feedback/squeel, but the Midland works great next to the Yeasu) Yeasu FT-7800R 2M/70M mobile, and Icom 2M HT my XYL used in her TJ, that she hooks up to her 2/70 mobile antenna.
I got a shelf bracket and 2 "L" brackets at the hardware store and mounted the brackets to my
rollbars on each side, then mounted the radios to the shelf bracket. I did NOT want to drill holes
in the dash of my NEW JK!! lol
