i don't have the wouxen but i do have the baofeng uv5r. it is pretty bullet proof and
is not that hard to program manually. i bought it online from radio409.com and received
the radio in about 3 weeks (they are in taiwan) battery lasts a loooong time and the radio sounds pretty
good on my yaesu 7900. read some posts about the usb cable! seems the clone cable doesn't work.
if my memory serves me, you need a kenwood usb cable. the software is in english and chinese.
sorry i have no knowledge of the wouxen but the baofeng is less $ and shipping was free from
radio409.

Several members of our local HAM Club, who are also CERT members, have the Wouxun UV3D dual band HT. General comments I have heard include, but are not limited to:
- Long battery life
- Range about the same as "big name" HTs
- Get the longer antenna
- Receive sound quality not all that good, but not a problem
- Problems with usb cable and manually loading repeater data - GET THE NEW PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE
- Depending on where you buy it, prices have ranged from $90 to $110. (not including options)
If I were you I would also look at the new Kenwood K-20A, 2 meter HT. Technically a much better radio and only $50 more. See the review in the October Issue of QST, page 53.
I have four HAM radios, they are all Yaesu. My HT is the VX-6, which is a tri-bander. I have never used anything but 2 meters. I have dropped my VX-6 in a creek, stepped on it several times and even ran over it with my JKU. It's still going strong after three and a half "hard duty" years. Generally speaking, HTs get used hard. Cheaper may not be better in the long run.

I purchased the "other" Wouxun radio. It works very well. Long battery life, easy to program (once you figure out the correct driver needed). When I first fired it up, it spoke to me in Chinese, but after playing with it for awhile I was able to switch to the English mode. The documentation isn't the best, but there are several web sites / blogs about the unit(s).
I bit the bullet and purchased through the local Ham store (HRO). Software is free on-line. I've received very good audio reports, but the audio out could be better.

I appreciate the replies.
After I posted my question, I figured for the price, WTF, go ahead and get it.
I couldnt deceide between the 3D or the 6D and figured Id get the
3 for the fact that I wouldnt use the freqs that the 6 could work.
I also had the hi gain antenna, along with a few other "extras" added to the order.
Checked UPS and it should be in my hand by tomorrow.
Not bad considering the warehouse is in So Cal and Im in Utah
