can someone give me a really dumbed down explanation on how to use my very basic multimeter to test the antenna ground and continuity through the antenna without the radio?

I don't think a multimeter can be used for that... I could be wrong though so if anyone out there knows something i dont please let me know. Also for an antenna when you say ground it's an rf ground not an electrical ground, though most electrical grounds make decent rf grounds in mobile situations.

Yes, you can use a meter for this. The meter has to be on the ohm setting; most newer meters will beep when there is continuity (test this by touching the probes together). Put one probe on the base of the antenna, and the other on the Jeep body or frame. Make sure you are contacting bare metal. iI mounting to the stock tailgate, you most definitely will need to ground it to the rest of the body/frame, otherwise you will have high SWR.
