I zip tied mine in my TJ and now in my JK. No problems at all.

IMHO, as long as you have the ground wire on the base grounded, you should be ok.

When getting an external speaker, does it connect to the mic or to the original box that the mixis hooked up to?

it connects to the box, there is a jack next to the coax connector.

I would also add that the tailgate ant mounts don't work very well, too much reflection.
